The concept of worshiping God for 1) Who He is and 2) What He does has been on my heart for many years now. I remember even teaching on it in a small church Okinawa years ago. The thought of writing a song based on that thought had never occurred to me until we were on the plane heading back to the states from Japan in March 2019. Before I knew it most of the words & melody were there, scribbled on some paper, and I completed it after we got home. The main Bible verses used are Psalm 145:1-13 & Psalm 40:1-3.

Partly because it's in the key of E and partly because I love the sound of a 12-string guitar playing the E chord and partly because I happened to listen to a lot of Mark Heard that month (who wrote and recorded a good many songs in E using a 12-string guitar) - I decided to do this one with a 12-string. I thought it might be cool to do the first half of the song using an acoustic 12-string and the second half with an electric one. I have a 12-string electric, but not an acoustic, so I planned to see if I could just borrow one for the recording.

When the album was still in its infancy, we gathered some basic recording gear and went to Tulsa to record Carly's vocals and guitar parts for the record before proceeding with her to Colorado for a short tour. I knew Carly owned a 12-string acoustic, but didn't know if it might be one decent enough to use on the recording - it was! She was kind enough to re-string it (a major undertaking and headache!) and it actually had quite a beautiful sound. The song's intro just came about while we were getting a sound level check, as I was fiddling around getting used to playing the instrument. I thought, "Hey, an intro!" For the outro I thought I might do the exact same part, only on my 12-string electric.
